It was an American statesman, John Quincy Adams who said: If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.
So, you do not necessarily have to be in a position that would normally have been ascribed to leadership. It is a very difficult concept to understand but I’ll try to present it as simply as I can. A good question to start with is this: Are leaders born? Or are they made?
Like every other question regarding human attributes, opinions differ as to whether or not leadership skills are innate or are developed along the way. Like every human attribute also, leadership qualities in any human falls along a scale. There are people who, from birth have the natural ability to lead, coordinate and oversee. There are others who are not just wired to relate well with other humans. Somewhere in the middle is where most of us fall.
This means we all have some leadership qualities in us which of course will need some polishing as we progress through life. Having said this, almost everybody, if charged with the responsibility, can deliver some form of leadership service.
On a slightly more advanced level however, there are some specific qualities that distinguish a leader, make him more admirable, more effective, more persuasive and more inspiring.
In a nutshell, leading people or achieving a position of leadership is not rocket science but be self aware and always keep in mind that you do not have to wait till you assume a position of authority before you should begin to see yourself as a leader. Also remember that, as a leader, you can either lead your followers to war and violence or help them achieve peace. thus, the leader in you should be vested in who you are and not what you are.
And like a famous American author and speaker John C. Maxwell puts it “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” – Aspire to be one.
